At issue was the fact that Rays’ pitcher Steve Geltz came up and in and hit legendary shortstop Derek Jeter in the hand. Not only that, but the Rays have ended up hitting Jeter with an unusual number of pitches over the course of this season.
It seems odd to think that the Rays would honor Jeter and give him gifts before the game, only to hit him with malicious intent during the game and during his final weeks as a big league player.
That seems to be how Girardi perceived the situation, no matter how unlikely it seems. He lost his mind with anger after Jeter was plunked, eventually leading to his ejection from the game.
Predictably, this led to retaliation from the Yankees, the benches clearing, and players mulling about on the field while secretly hoping that they will not have to actually fight anybody.
The unwritten rules, you guys.
