Rory McIlroy wins PGA of America Player of the Year
Not very surprisingly, it was Rory McIlroy who was given the Vardon Trophy for PGA leader in scoring average and the PGA of America’s Player of the Year Tuesday for the second time in his career after a stellar season.
After winning three consecutive events during the summer, including two majors, McIlroy earned 160 points to easily claim the top honor from the PGA. Bubba Watson was a distant second with 62 points, while Martin Kaymer earned 52 points and Jimmy Walker had 46.

McIlroy received 70 points for three victories, 50 for two majors, 20 for leading the money list and 20 for winning the Vardon Trophy.
McIlroy’s adjusted scoring average of 68.82 in 66 rounds led the PGA, Sergio Garcia came in second with 68.95 average despite not winning any PGA Tour events this year.
McIlroy’s amazing three tournament stretch from the British Open, Bridgestone Invitational and the PGA Championship had McIlroy receiving global attention as the world’s best golfer and earning him the world No. 1 ranking.
The PGA Tour Player of the Year, a different honor, is voted on by the players and is announced just before the 2014-15 season begins. On Monday, the PGA Tour released its five nominees for its Player of the Year award: McIlroy, Kaymer, Watson, Walker and Billy Horschel.
Rory won both honors in 2012 when he won four times in the season including the PGA Championship.
