We know the Arizona Diamondbacks have interviewed former Major League pitcher and now-agent Dave Stewart for its open general manager position, but now rumors appear to point to Stewart as the front-runner for the job.

Stewart has never been an MLB general manager, but was an assistant GM with the Toronto Blue Jays before becoming an agent. Though Arizona might seem a curious place for Stewart, who has interviewed for other GM jobs in the past, to get his first team to run, but there’s some familiarity here. Diamondbacks Chief Baseball Officer Tony La Russa managed Stewart for parts of eight seasons, including four straight 20-win seasons. Stewart’s playing career ended with La Russa’s Oakland Athletics in 1995. La Russa was hired earlier this year, and former GM Kevin Towers remains with the team in an unspecified role, though it’s expected his role with the team in the future will depend on the GM hired. Manager Kirk Gibson’s status with the team is uncertain as well.

Stewart played from 1978 until 1995, playing mostly with Oakland but also with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Texas Rangers, the Philadelphia Phillies, and the Toronto Blue Jays. Stewart won World Series rings as a pitcher in 1981 with the Dodgers, 1985 with the Athletics, and 1993 with the Blue Jays. He represents current players such as the Dodgers’ Matt Kemp and Chad Billingsley.
