Toronto Blue Jays’ Marcus Stroman suspended six games
By Ed Carroll
Major League Baseball has suspended Marcus Stroman of the Toronto Blue Jays for six games, after it determined Stroman intentionally threw a pitch at Baltimore Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph’s head in the sixth inning of Monday’s 5-2 Orioles win. The suspension is pending an appeal, which Stroman plans to file, and in the meantime Stroman will be allowed to play, per MLB rules.

No one is quite sure why Stroman threw at Joseph, though there’s speculation Joseph accidentally stepped on Jose Reyes’s fingers during a play at the plate, but little to justify throwing at a guy’s head.
There were reports yesterday that Stroman would not be suspended for his actions, because he was not ejected from the game. Those reports appear to be incorrect.
It is good to see MLB take some sort of a stand against needless retaliation, particularly with pitches thrown near the head. Concussions have rightfully become a major concern across all sports, and MLB’s seven-day concussion DL was a good first step to preventing repeat head injuries.
Preventing and deterring needless head injuries from headhunting pitchers is something MLB should be taking a stand against, and action against Marcus Stroman’s stupid decision is the right call.
