It looked like the Boston Celtics were poised to make a big move in the offseason with several young players and futrue draft pick. Instead, the Celtics opted to make both of their first round picks, selecting former Oklahoma State Cowboys’ point guard Marcus Smart with the sixth-overall pick and former Kentucky Wildcats’ swingman James Young with the 17th-overall selection. That may signal the Celtics are going to continue to build around their youth and view Smart as a future team leader.

Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders believes Smart has star potential.

"Marcus Smart is Boston is someone worth watching because he has star potential."

Smart has struggled as a shooter and sometimes as ball-handler but is obviously very talented. He should be a good defender from the start. Smart’s talent and the high hopes for him also may make it easier for the Celtics to trade star point guard Rajon Rondo.

Smart was ranked as the sixth-best prospect in the draft by Jonathan Givony of Draft Express. He averaged 18.0 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game last season and shot 42.2% from the field, 29.9% from beyond the arc and 72.8% from the charity stripe. Smart measured in at 6’3.25 and 227 lbs. with a wingspan of 6’9.25 at the NBA’s Scouting Combine.
