College football: Week 3 results against the spread
By Mike Marteny
In case you missed my picks from last week, they are as follows:
More from College Football Odds
- Colorado football getting insane amount of bets to win 2024 National Championship
- College Football National Championship Odds on National Signing Day
- 3 college football teams that could beat Georgia in 2023 (Can Florida State break through?)
- College Football 2023 National Championship Odds (Georgia favored for three-peat)
- Best college football bowl game picks today (Best bets for Monday, January 2)
At first glance, I might have had my worst week in history. I hope that is not the case. I am in a big enough hole already!
Winners against the spread will be in bold.
Louisiana Tech at North Texas(-3.5): MISS! Dixon ran wild on North Texas, and he wasn’t the only one.
Houston at BYU(-17.5):MISS! BYU was well on their way to running off with this until Houston finally figured out their offense. It only took them 2.5 games…..
Toledo at Cincinnati(-10.5): MISS! I should have known better. This is not that start that I was looking for.
Baylor(-34.5) at Buffalo: HIT! No surprise here.
Indiana(-7.5) at Bowling Green: MISS! The MAC strikes again! This time they took down a team that actually has a shot at a bowl….
Kent State at Ohio State(-31.5): HIT! I guess I needed this as bad as the Buckeyes did….
Ohio at Marshall(-20.5): HIT! Woo hoo! Two in a row!
Central Florida at Missouri(-10.5): MISS! It looks like the Tigers might be flying under the radar again. They are cover machines right now.
Boise State(-16.5) at Connectcut: HIT! Ugly game by the Broncos, but at least they still covered.
East Carolina at Virginia Tech(-9.5): HIT! I was among the minority that liked ECU straight up.
Georgia Southern at Georgia Tech(-16.5): HIT! The Bees needed a late touchdown to avoid the upset.
Pittsburgh(-25.5) at Florida International: MISS! Pitt actually trailed 16-0 after the first quarter. Yuck!
Syracuse(-4.5) at Central Michigan: HIT! Big for for the Orange…….literally.
West Virginia at Maryland(-3.5): MISS! Oh well, at least it was a fun one to watch!
Massachusetts at Vanderbilt(-16.5):MISS! This is the worst Vanderbilt team in the 2000’s.
Louisville(-6.5) at Virginia: HIT! Underestimate the Cavs D at your own peril.
Air Force(-11.5) at Georgia State: MISS! Ugh. Air Force giving up four second half touchdowns did me in.
Wyoming at Oregon(-43.5):MISS! I really thought I picked Wyoming here. Craig Bohl has the team playing well. They actually led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Kansas at Duke(-13.5): HIT! I really didn’t understand this line. KU might not win another game…..
Miami(OH) at Michigan(-33.5): MISS! The first in a long line of bad decisions.
North Carolina State(-1.5) at South Florida: MISS! Another ‘what was I thinking’ moment.
Arkansas at Texas Tech(EVEN): MISS! A dominant performance by the Hogs.
Arkansas State at Miami(FL)(-16.5): MISS! The Hurricanes played better all the way around, but this is a somewhat inferior team.
Iowa State at Iowa(-12.5): HIT! Iowa was begging to lose anyway.
Georgia(-6.5) at South Carolina: MISS! The Gamecock D played their best game of the year.
Louisiana-Lafayette at Mississippi(-27.5) HIT! The Rebs are looking like this could finally be the year.
Mississippi State(-13.5) at South Alabama: HIT! The SEC West is the most brutal division in college football, and it isn’t even close.
Minnesota at TCU(-15.5): MISS! So much for my “inside source”…….
Illinois at Washington(-13.5): MISS! I underestimated just how bad the Illinois defense is.
Army at Stanford(-28.5): HIT! Nice rebound for the Cardinal. Dominant defensive performance.
Western Michigan at Idaho(-2.5): MISS! I knew better! Idaho has been in my bottom five for a while now…..
Southern Mississippi at Alabama(-47.5): HIT! The Tide dominated, and didn’t come close to covering. That’s how insane this line was.
Eastern Michigan at Old Dominion(-18.5): MISS! So much for the ‘boatload of points’. The Monarchs didn’t even score what they were favored by!
Northern Illinois(-10.5) at UNLV: HIT! Kane isn’t as dynamic as Lynch, but he is doing well in this offense, and should only get better.
Western Kentucky at Middle Tennessee State(-1.5): MISS! With all due respect to Kentucky and Florida, this was the most entertaining game of the day.
UTSA at Oklahoma State(-13.5): MISS! Oklahoma State is better than anyone thought.
Wake Forest at Utah State(-15.5): MISS! The Aggies scored just seven points after Keaton left the game, otherwise this was a safe bet.
Tulsa(-1.5) at Florida Atlantic: MISS! This was a horrible loss for Tulsa.
Louisiana-Monroe at LSU(-31.5): MISS! The half got me.
Kentucky at Florida(-17.5): MISS! The Gators’ offensive woes reared their ugly head again.
Purdue at Notre Dame(-28.5): MISS! The Irish offense mostly sleepwalked through this one.
Penn State(-3.5) at Rutgers: MISS!Drug down by another half.
New Mexico State at UTEP(-10.5): HIT! Good showing offensively for the Miners.
USC(-17.5) at Boston College: MISS! The Trojans snowed me with the win at Stanford.
Tennessee at Oklahoma(-20.5): HIT! Wow, the defense looks good. Not quite 2000 good, but it’s getting there.
Navy(-9.5) at Texas State: HIT! Even without Reynolds, the Middies did well.
UCLA(-7.5) vs Texas: MISS! I let the Horns getting pushed around by BYU cloud my jugdment. I’m guessing that I wasn’t the only one.
Rice at Texas A&M(-32.5): MISS! I’m still surprised that the Aggies didn’t cover.
Arizona State(-16.5) at Colorado: MISS! When Kelly left this game, so did my chance of getting this right.
Nebraska(-13.5) at Fresno State: HIT! The Bulldogs’ defense is atrocious.
Nevada at Arizona(-19.5): HIT! Nevada is a solid team.
By my count, that put me at 20-31 on the week. That drops me to 57-77 on the year. I have never been this far below .500 this late in the season, so I have a lot of work to do.
Stay tuned today for the first predictions of the week!
