Captain Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin to miss Penguins training camp.

Teams all around the National Hockey League are beginning their training camps in over the course of the next few days, but it seems as if one NHL club will be without two of their biggest stars as they prepare to head into the 2014-15 season.

Pittsburgh Penguins Executive Vice President and General Manager Jim Rutherford announced via the official Penguins website today that Penguins captain Sidney Crosby and center Evgeni Malkin would not be joining the team at training camp.

According to NHL.com, the decision was made based on the fact that both players sustained injuries while preparing for camp.

This is a very interesting assertion considering that they make absolutely no mention of specific injuries to either player, and the new report almost entirely contradicts an article that was posted earlier this month that stated that Crosby was 100% healthy heading into the new season.

It was rumored that Crosby would need surgery to repair an injury to his wrist that he suffered towards the end of last season; however, his injuries turned out to be less severe than initially believed. Malkin missed a big chunk of the final weeks of the regular season due to a foot injury.

While we can respect a team not wanting two of their star players to risk any injury heading into the new season is completely understandable, training camp is where players head, not just to be evaluated for the new season, but to shake off all the rust that may or may not have formed during the summer vacation and to build chemistry among the lines.

If nothing else, it will be interesting to see how this affects the Penguins heading into the new season. Considering the fact that Crosby led the league in points last season, one would assume that it wouldn’t be too much of a loss to the team for him to miss training camp; however, with Tampa Bay Lightning captain Steven Stamkos healthy heading into the new season, he will definitely have some competition for the top spot this season.
