Gibson has been among the team’s most consistent players and often outplayed former starter Carlos Boozer. He was expected to take over the starting role after the Bulls amnestied Boozer. They did that this summer, but signed Pau Gasol to replace him, effectively leaving Gibson on the sidelines for the start of games.
Not to mention the Bulls brought on Nikola Mirotic, further adding to the jam at power forward. According to Aggrey Sam of CSNChicago.com, Gibson isn’t happy with his role.
"Privately, Gibson isn’t too thrilled with the prospect of continuing to be a reserve, according to multiple people familiar with the situation, but the upbeat, team-first player values winning and chemistry too much to make it an issue or distraction. Furthermore, being an underdog his entire basketball career, it could serve as motivation and help him thrive, building upon last year’s bounce-back campaign and improvement as a scorer, which came after a disappointing, injury-riddled season immediately following a long-term contract extension with the Bulls on Halloween 2012."
That was the report Gibson was apparently disputing. The Bulls are looking like contenders in the Eastern Conference this season, especially with the return of Derrick Rose and the addition of Pau Gasol. He’s famously a favorite of coach Tom Thibodeau and will play a key role in the team regardless of when he sees the court, and he should get his minutes.
