When the final whistle blew, a wild end to the game swung in Club America’s favor as they edged Pachuca, 2-1, on a late goal.
Las Aguilas have been struggling to score in the Apertura since losing Raul Jimenez to Atletico Madrid, but things were looking up when they found the back of the net ten times earlier this week following a ten-goal performance against Bayamon FC in the CONCACAF Champions League.
Unfortunately, that success did not carry over.
The good news for Club America, however, is that Tuzos defender Daniel Arreola Arguello had a misstep in the first half and gave Las Aguilas a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute off of an own goal.
While that was not the way America was hoping to end their scoreless streak in the 2014 Apertura, the lead was all that mattered at the time.
After the halftime break, both teams were still fighting and things got crazy with less than 15 minutes to go.
In the 78th minute, Ariel Nahuelpán nailed a left footed shot from the center of the box after a pass from Erick Gabriel Gutiérrez Galaviz. The shot beat Moises Munoz to the bottom right corner of the net to score the equalizer for Tuzos.
However, just one minute later, Miguel Layún connected on a shot following a pass from Rubens Sambueza on a fast break opportunity to put Club America right back on top.
The wild sequence of events led to some increased intensity in the final minutes of the game as things began to get chippy in stoppage time before cooler heads prevailed. Unfortunately for Tuzos, their strong effort at the end of the game was not enough as Layun’s quick answer to the equalizer turned out to be the game-winner.
