The Detroit Tigers appear to be concerned about Alex Avila’s concussion symptoms, and it seems every time the catcher attempts to resume baseball activities, the symptoms flare up. Avila has been out of action since September 14, when he was injured in a game in Detroit against the Cleveland Indians while being tagged in the head on a pickoff.

The Tigers are preparing for life without Avila for awhile, as Avila said he’s been having difficulty focusing and “tracking the baseball” when thrown or hit to him. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus praised rookie catcher James McCann, but it’s clear the Tigers could really use Avila guiding the pitching staff and occasionally providing a big hit:
Tigers Manager Brad Ausmus spoke highly of James McCann and his ability to work with pitchers, based on what he's heard from MiLB staff.

Avila has been worth 2.2 fWAR, per Fangraphs, and most of his value is gained from his defense behind the plate, though the 27-year old catcher does have 11 home runs this season. This is the third year in a row Avila has dealt with concussion issues, and the catcher is noted for taking an unusual number of foul balls to the catcher’s mask.
That said, the Tigers are absolutely doing the right thing here: Avila is young and not only has years ahead of him in his baseball career, but also his life. Head injuries are becoming increasingly scary as more research is put into their effects, and Detroit’s caution is prudent, as there’s still enough time left in the season to leave a chance Avila recovers for the postseason.
