Shortly after this game had started, the Detroit Tigers stomped out all of that excitement. They rained on the parade. They peed in the punch. The ruined the party and went on to blast the Royals by a final score of 10-1.
There were a number of offensive stars for the Tigers as they knocked 19 hits en route to those 10 runs. Ian Kinsler had three hits and three RBI, J.D. Martinez had three hits, and Torii Hunter, Victor Martinez, and Miguel Cabrera all drove in runs. All told, the Detroit lineup roughed up starting pitcher Jason Vargas to the tune of five runs and then got to reliever Casey Coleman for another four.
Kinsler punctuated the scoring with this two-run home run.
From the Tigers’ perspective, the performance of starting pitcher Justin Verlander was arguably just as important as the offensive outburst from their lineup. The former Cy Young winner and MVP pitched seven effective innings, allowing just one earned run.
Those two teams will resume this crucial series on Saturday afternoon with the Tigers holding a 1.5 game lead in the American League Central race.
