The San Diego Chargers may be missed another huge piece of their offense after today. Running back Danny Woodhead was carted off the field with an apparent ankle injury during the first quarter against the Buffalo Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium. He will not return to the game.

According to Fox Sports, Woodhead will need surgery on his right leg. He will seek a second opinion on the team’s return to San Diego.

With starting running back Ryan Mathews already out for at least a month, Woodhead was expected to help Donald Brown carry the load in Mathews’ absence. Now either Branden Oliver or Marion Grice will have to step up to help ease the loss of Woodhead. Neither of them are as good of a receiver out of the backfield as Woodhead though.

Woodhead had 38 yards on 15 carries and 34 yards on five catches in the first two games of the season. Woodhead was signed before last season as a cheaper alternative to Darren Sproles.

Woodhead gained 429  yards rushing and 605 yards receiving in his first season with the Chargers last year. He caught a whopping 76 passes out of the backfield!

This takes a huge element out of the San Diego Chargers offense. They had better hope that Woodhead is not forced to miss significant time, though the Fox Sports report is ominous.
