College football thoughts and musings from early games September 20

Did you miss any of the early games? I didn’t! I cram my brain with football so you don’t have to!

More from College Football Odds

Here is what you may have missed.

Kansas State has no one to blame but themselves. The coaching staff came up with a great game plan to keep them in the game with Auburn. Three missed field goals, and a ball that went right through Tyler Lockett’s hands in into an Auburn defender’s torpedoed a great effort. I don’t think that Auburn played a bad game. They did what they usually do. Kansas State just stood toe to toe with them for as long as they could. And without all of the mistakes, who knows? Maybe the Big 12(10) starts getting more respect.

South Florida already has as many wins as they did all of last season.

Wisconsin ran for a school record 644 yards against a depleted Bowling Green defense. They had three guys with over 100 yards rushing, and another that had 94. Melvin Gordon ran for a career high 253 yards on just 13 carries,  and a school record five touchdowns. The team tied a team record with eight rushing touchdowns. Even Tanner McEvoy ran for more yards than he passed for. This was the highest rushing total for a Big Ten(14) team since 1930. The word “trampled” comes to mind…..

Statistically, Iowa was dominated in every facet of the game, yet they still scored 17 second half points to steal the game away from Pittsburgh. Pitt did have a touchdown that should have been caught that may have changed the game in the third quarter, but to me the real difference was Iowa putting C.J. Beathard in at quarterback. He has a little bit better arm than Jake Rudock, ,but more importantly, he makes better decisions. Oh, and this catch by Damond Powell would be demoralizing to anyone…..

Michael Brewer might be the worst starting quarterback in a “power five” conference. He threw three second half interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown, to let Georgia Tech steal a game in Blacksburg. Justin Thomas had a huge game for Georgia Tech. He threw for 125 yards, and ran for 165 against the vaunted Virginia Tech defense. He ran for a score and threw for a score as well. Who knew that a GT quarterback could throw for over 100?

Michigan State scored 73 points, which was their highest total since they put up 76 on Northwestern in 1989. They even covered a ridiculous 45.5 point spread!

It was not Heisman candidate Todd Gurley who stole the show for Georgia. It was freshman Sony Michel. Michel ran for a game high 155 yards and three touchdowns. Gurley barely broke a sweat. He only had six carries in the 66-0 rout of Troy. This was the most points Georgia has scored since 1994, and their largest margin of victory since 1958.

Has anyone else noticed that Duke is 4-0 again? This is practically the same team that won the ACC Coastal last year, and that should have beaten Texas A&M in the Peach (Chick-Fil-A for those of you that enjoy the corporation depravation) Bowl.

Stay tuned for my rundowns of the rest of Saturday’s games!
