Jimmy Rollins thought he would be back in action for the Philadelphia Phillies sometime this weekend, when the Phillies traveled to his hometown of Oakland to face the free-falling Athletics. Instead, after testing his sore left hamstring again on Saturday, Rollins remains out for the Phillies.

Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg and the team’s head trainer watched Rollins test out his hamstring with some jogging yesterday, and Sandberg was non-committal on whether Rollins, who has missed the team’s past 12 games, would return for any of the final seven games this season, saying he wasn’t leaning “one way or the other” and was simply watching the progress Rollins was making.

“We’ll see how he does and how he goes,” Sandberg said of Rollins.

There’s a slight bit of intrigue to Rollins’s injury, as the Phillies are long out of the postseason race, but there are possible implications to the injury. If Rollins finishes the year on the DL, his 2015 option, which is worth $11 million dollars and vested in July, can be voided unless a mutually-agreed upon doctor clears Rollins to be on the Opening Day roster next season. It’s doubtful this becomes a massive issue, as Rollins had a good season, with 17 home runs and 28 stolen bases, and the team likely would rather he return for $11 million than have to find a new shortstop elsewhere. We’ll see if Philly decides to DL Rollins before the season is over.
