Vernon Davis left the San Francisco 49ers’s Week 2 loss to the Chicago Bears with a bruised ankle, and after not practicing all week, news has come down not to expect the 49ers’s star tight end to play today:
It’s doubtful #49ers star TE Vernon Davis (bruised ankle) will play today vs. #Cardinals I’m told. He was on crutches until Thursday.

Davis hurt his ankle as he was dragged down by Bears LB Jon Bostic in the fourth quarter, when Chicago scored 21 unanswered points to win on the road, 28-20. Davis was three-for-three in catches with 39 yards gained, and an MRI on the ankle revealed no serious damage, as the injury appears to be a “low” ankle injury, and therefore less severe.
Backup Vance McDonald also left the game with a knee injury, so it seems like undrafted free agent Derek Carrier will get the start at tight end for San Francisco against the Arizona Cardinals.
Davis stopped using his crutches on Thursday, but was described as still “hobbling around” during the practice he sat out that day. On the year, Davis has seven receptions for 84 yards, is averaging 11.9 yards a catch, and has two touchdowns.
