Atlanta Braves fire general manager Frank Wren
By Hayden Kane
The Atlanta Braves collapsed and failed to reach the 2014 playoffs, having officially been eliminated on Sunday afternoon. The team wasted little time in designating a fall guy, as they announced via their Twitter feed on Monday that general manager Frank Wren has been fired.
As it became more and more clear that the Braves might fail to reach the postseason in 2014, grumblings started to emerge that Wren and manager Fredi Gonzalez might find themselves on the hot seat. This swift dismissal of Wren does not guarantee Gonzalez’s fate one direction or the other, but it certainly doesn’t bode well for him.

Wren had been general manager in Atlanta in 2007. His tenure will ultimately be remembered for two distinctly different philosophies. The first philpsophy was to proactively lock up foundational, young players like Freddie Freeman, Andrelton Simmons, and Julio Teheran, buying out their arbitration years in the process. The second philosophy was to over-commit to risky players like B.J. Upton and Dan Uggla, strapping the team financially. The former has the Braves set up for a quick turnaround and long-term success, while the latter likely cost Wren his job.
The Braves have named John Hart, of MLB Network fame, as the interim general manager. Hart had been working with the team as a consultant this season.
