I can’t say I blame him, but this was a very George W. Bush move from Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy.

The Green Bay Packers coach vowed not to criticize players during news conferences- yet, as with so many blanket promises, Mike McCarthy found this one impossible to keep.

Just three games into the regular season, Eddie Lacy’s play has been nothing short of dismal.

Coming off of a 2013 season that saw him named Rookie of the Year, Lacy has failed to average more than 3.1 yards per carry. He actually saw “five carries in the past game that netted either zero or negative yardage” in their loss to the Detroit Lions, according to the Milwaukee Wisconsin Journal-Sentinel.

As a goalie who once figured out that I average about a .200 save percentage, I have very little room to talk. As a player who many expected to follow up a fantastic rookie campaign with an even better sophomore season, though, things just haven’t gone the way they should for Eddie Lacy. The coach insisted that Lacy needs to play better, and fans wholeheartedly agree.

"“Eddie needs to play better,” McCarthy said. “I’m not going to do this anymore. I don’t correct individuals in the media.”"

Of course, he followed up his promise that he doesn’t correct individuals in the media by suggesting that the players made mistakes that players learned to avoid in “elementary school football”. Maybe I’m overly sensitive, but that sounds like criticism to me?

The coach did admit that the team’s running game wasn’t completely down the drain, adding that Lacy’s fellow running back James Starks had some nice runs. Overall, though, the conference didn’t sound particularly optimistic for a front office determined not to harp on the negative.
