Specifics of the three-year deal are still being ironed out as Martino writes it is not a simple three-year deal considering Alderson had an option year for 2015. One source tells Martino that both sides are working on a three-year extension, another cautioned that the terms of the deal aren’t yet established.
CBS’ Jon Heyman reports the deal is a new three-year deal so this would in effect wipe out the option and his contract will run through the 2017 season.
Alderson, 66, has been the team’s general manager for the previous three seasons with records of 77-85, 74-88, 74-88 and are currently 76-80 as the Mets hope to avoid their fourth consecutive losing under Alderson’s watch as the season nears a close.
Matt Harvey will rejoin the Mets’ rotation next season after missing this year as he recovers from Tommy John surgery and will join a rotation that features top Rookie of the Year candidate Jacob deGrom and Zack Wheeler and likely the team’s top prospect in Noah Syndergaard. That has the makings of a dangerous rotation that could compete with the Washington Nationals in the National League East.
Having said that, Alderson needs to hit some home runs in free agency and upgrade the lineup and give some protection for third baseman David Wright to be considered wild card contenders.
It is also widely expected that Alderson will keep Terry Collins as the team’s manager for next season.
