DeMarco Murray among rare company with bad start to 2014
By Cory Buck
DeMarco Murray is having a historically good three-week start to the NFL season. Thanks to a 100-yard performance in Week 3 against the St. Louis Rams, Murray joined a short list of Hall-of-Fame running backs to rush for 100 yards in each of his first three games.

Gregg Rosenthal at NFL.com notes that Murray joined Emmitt Smith, Curtis Martin, Jim Brown and O.J. Simpson to accomplish the feat, putting a historic perspective on Murray’s start. After three weeks, Murray leads the NFL in rushing with 385 yards, giving him an average of about 128 yards/game to start the season.
Murray’s hard rushing has been especially fortuitous for the Cowboys, who have endured some familiar pains with Tony Romo under center. Having undergone back surgery in the last year, Romo came out flat in Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers before taking a seat back while DeMarco Murray ran for 167 yards against the Tennessee Titans in Week 2.
Now with Romo gaining health and confidence once more, the Dallas Cowboys appear to have a complete offense with deadly explosiveness. Of course, that’s after just three weeks, two of which were spent beating up on middling clubs.
We’ll have a better idea of where Murray stands as the season progresses, but for now Murray can exalt in his rarefied air while striving to push the streak beyond three.
