Time-mapping Redskins QB Robert Griffin III’s most unfortunate events
Third Year
July 3, 2014: RG3 implies Shanahan had ulterior motives
The dust was just clearing following the firing of Mike Shanahan, when RG3 went ahead and kicked it back up again. RG3 seems to have an opinion on most things. He’s entitled to it. He doesn’t have to voice it all the time, though. The feud between RG3 and Mike Shanahan seemed to be over, but alas, Griffin kicked the dead horse by implying that the Redskins organization was finally free of “ulterior motives,” which presumably left the building with Shanahan. What’s the point? Just say something generic and forgettable to the press and move on. That’s what you do in football. You move on. RG3 seems unable to do that.
Sept. 14, 2014: Sayonara ankle integrity
This could have been the year where he set the record straight – where he became Matthew Stafford not Sam Bradford. Stafford and Bradford encountered some injuries early in their career. But Stafford has been able to stay on the field. Bradford is out for the year with an ACL injury. RG3 can’t rush back to the field or else he’s got the potential for a Bradford-esk list of injuries. If that did come to be, then RG3 would be in the danger of parting ways with the team that drafted him, just like Bradford. Six weeks off for RG3. (what’s he getting paid not to play vs what Cousins is getting paid to play?)
Sept. 14, 21 2014: Kirk Cousins steps up again
Cousins seems to step up most in relief of RG3. The Redskins have been better off by taking Cousins in the same draft class as RG3. Cousins has been good insurance for an unreliable starter. But that only lasts for so long. Cousins is becoming a very real threat. Still, Cousins, who fell to the Redskins at a place of good value in the draft, is starting to apply greater amounts of pressure on Griffin. He’s already 52-of-81 (64.2 percent) for 677 yards, five touchdowns and one interception.
