The Houston Rockets had big plans entering the offseason but their top two targets, New York Knicks’ forward Carmelo Anthony and Miami Heat big man Chris Bosh, re-signed with their teams. The Rockets also traded center Omer Asik and point guard Jeremy Lin to clear cap room and then lost forward Chandler Parsons to the Dallas Mavericks. They responded by signing swingman Trevor Ariza and dealt for guard Jason Terry but their offseason has to be labeled as a disappointment.

Chuck Myron believes the Rockets had a rough offseason but points out that they had two fantastic offseasons prior to that.

"That depends on whether you’re talking about their moves from this offseason or in offseasons past. This summer was a real disappointment for them, unless Jason Terry finds the fountain of youth, but on the whole, I think they’ve done quite well in recent years. They were stuck just outside the playoffs for several years in a row, at the back end of the lottery, and now they’re a fringe contender with James Harden and Dwight Howard. They’ve had one rough offseason out of the last three, which is a pretty nice rate of success."

Myron’s point is taken – if acquiring only two All-Star players in three seasons rather than three is a failure, I’m sure just about every GM in the league would sign up for failure.

Of course, the Rockets clearly weren’t good enough to contend last season
