The Arizona Diamondbacks have reportedly made an offer to agent and former MLB pitcher Dave Stewart to become the team’s next general manager, replacing Kevin Towers, who was removed from the GM position earlier in the summer, according to CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman.

Stewart, who has been considered the frontrunner for the position, pitched for Dbacks chief baseball officer Tony La Russa when La Russa managed the Oakland Athletics.

Towers has been offered a position in the organization pending the hire of the next GM, and Heyman speculates that a Stewart hiring could mean good news for Towers, who is close to Stewart. Stewart was Tower’s pitching coach for the San Diego Padres while Towers was the GM. Stewart has also been an assistant GM of the Toronto Blue Jays, though he has never been a general manager. In order for Stewart to accept the position, he’d need to transfer ownership of his agency, and it appears he’s started the process of doing so:

Becoming a MLB general manager is a dream of Stewart’s, according to Heyman, and Stewart has missed out on landing GM positions with Toronto and the Milwaukee Brewers in the past. He’d be taking over a Diamondbacks team in turmoil, and the status of controversial manager Kirk Gibson hasn’t been decided yet, presumably so Stewart can bring in a new manager if he so desires. An official announcement is expected Thursday, but the timetable could change for Arizona.
