This week marks the final games for New York Yankees’ shortstop Derek Jeter. As such, many people around the baseball world are trying to put his long and successful career into context.

That is not such an easy thing, however, especially considering that Jeter’s legacy has become oddly polarizing and he plays for a polarizing franchise. It seems that people either love or hate Jeter in the same way that they love or hate the Yankees, and that love or hatred informs their opinions of Jeter’s career.
When looking for a voice to put Jeter’s into perspective, Bob Costas is a good place to start. Yes, Costas’s sanctimonious tone rubs people the wrong way sometimes, but when it comes to trying to understand the historical context of a situation or a legacy that is still ongoing, Costas does it as well as anybody.
