If you believe that the baseball gods came through in a big moment, then you might be right. If you believe that random baseball luck took place, and it just so happened to be in what might have been Derek Jeter‘s final at-bat at Yankee Stadium, then you can go with that too.

It wasn’t exactly a line drive or one of his patented shots to the opposite field, but Jeter came through in the clutch nevertheless with the bases loaded and the score tied at 2-2. Well, he at least came through insofar as he put the ball in play and it rolled weakly to a spot in the infield where it was tough for Baltimore Orioles’ shortstop J.J. Hardy to make a play.
Hardy leaned, tried to make the throw to second, but he just couldn’t do it. Whatever explanation you want to offer for that fact, it made it such that the Captain was the hero in front of the home crowd one last time.
It won’t go on Jeter’s greatest hits, but this was still a nice moment in front of a home crowd for whom it meant a lot.
