Missouri Tigers vs South Carolina Gamecocks

Gary Pinkel and the Missouri Tigers travel to Columbia, along with the College Gameday crew, for this weekend’s SEC East showdown with Steve Spurrier and the no. 13 South Carolina Gamecocks at Williams-Brice Stadium. Both teams are 3-1, with the memory of their thrilling overtime game last year still fresh in both of their minds.

Location: Columbia, SC
Stadium: Williams-Brice Stadium
TV info: ESPN

Keys to Victory

Does anybody really know what kind of team the Gamecocks are in 2014? We knew that their defense would be down this season, but they have allowed 52, 23, 35, and 34 points in their four games this season. They were still able to outscore an elite opponent when they out-dueled Georgia in week 2, and that might be their task again in this game.

Tigers’ quarterback Maty Mauk has posted straight-up gaudy numbers so far this season, having thrown for 978 yards and 14 touchdowns through four games. He will have to elevate his game up to another level for this road SEC showdown, but there is plenty of reason to think he and the Missouri offense can put a scare into the Ol’ Ball Coach if they get out to a fast start in this game.

Betting Odds

Point spread: Gamecocks -5.5
Moneyline:  Gamecocks -220, Tigers +180
Over/Under: 61.5

Prediction

The over-under might say it all for this game: both of these teams love to score points and don’t love to stop opposing offenses nearly as much.Following the trend in the SEC and in college football generally, this should be a shootout between two good teams.

Protecting the ball will be key. With the Gamecocks playing at home, they will be able to force a couple key Missouri mistakes to come out with a tight win at home. Let’s just hope that the events of this game call for another rant from Spurrier in the post-game presser.

Final Score: Gamecocks 35, Tigers 31
