Washington believes Robert Griffin III would accept role as backup QB

There is a fairly tired cliche in the NFL that often rings true: you can lose your job to injury. Sometimes that is just how things play out, whether it be at the quarterback position or a less high-profile spot on the field. Even knowing that, however, it seems impossible to believe that Robert Griffin III would just settle in as the backup quarterback for the Washington Redskins.

Washington has to go with the most effective player, of course, but given the ridiculous pile of draft picks they surrendered to trade for the right to draft Griffin with the no. 2 overall selection in the 2012 draft, that would be one heck of an expensive backup quarterback.

Head coach Jay Gruden acknowledged the possibility this week that Kirk Cousins could remain the starting quarterback after RGIII returns. If that were to happen, the Washington coaching staff believes that RGIII would accept a role as the team’s backup QB. According to Gregg Rosenthal and Ian Rapoport of NFL.com:

"Griffin got the cast off his ankle last week, and won’t be ready to play for five or six weeks. Cousins could prove worthy of the starting job by then.“If that happens, they firmly believe RGIII will handle it well. And he will be good on the sidelines,” Rapoport said, noting that the team sees Griffin as a “team guy.”"

Considering RGIII’s obsession with sound bites, mantras, and hash-tags thus far in his young career, I’m not so sure he will just set his ego aside that way. It should be an interesting situation in Washington.
