The Boston Red Sox’s designated hitter, David Ortiz, sat out his second straight game last night with a sore wrist, and there is speculation he could sit out the entire weekend series at Fenway Park against the New York Yankees.

The Red Sox are labeling Ortiz’s injury as a sore wrist, and tests showed inflammation similar to the area where Ortiz had a torn tendon sheath in 2008, and might have had a connection to his slow 2009 start, when he didn’t hit his first home run until the middle of May. The Red Sox have long been eliminated from postseason contention (as have been the Yankees), so the weekend games are completely meaningless. Ortiz is also 38-years old and not getting any younger, though he did have another productive season for Boston in 2014, so the caution by the Red Sox is fairly understandable.

Assuming Ortiz is done for 2014, he finishes with 35 home runs, and slashed .263/.355/.517, with a weighted on base average (wOBA) of .369. The DH was worth 2.4 fWAR in his 12th season in Boston. He scored 59 runs and drove in 104, and is under contract for 2015 with two option years, so he will likely finish out his career with the Red Sox. Ortiz also played five seasons with the Minnesota Twins, from 1997 until he was let go by them after 2002.
