MLB: AL Wild Card standings update
By Ed Carroll
It’s the final weekend of MLB regular season games, and while the National League playoff teams are all but set, there’s still some intrigue in the American League. The Los Angeles Angels have clinched the AL West title, the Baltimore Orioles are the kings of the AL East and the Detroit Tigers have clinched a playoff berth, at the least, and they lead the AL Central by a two-game gap over the Kansas City Royals.

The Oakland Athletics continue their slide, and after losing three straight, find themselves in the second Wild Card spot and fighting for their playoff lives. Oakland is now a game behind Kansas City to host the Wild Card game, and are two games ahead of the Seattle Mariners, plus three games ahead of the somehow-still alive Cleveland Indians.
Seattle’s elimination number is at two, meaning any combination of wins (by the team in the first Wild Card position) or losses by the Mariners equaling two eliminates Seattle.
The Indians are in an even more precarious spot, as they cannot lose another game and have to hope the Royals (or Oakland, if they can overtake KC) lose out to have a shot. There’s a chance the AL playoff picture could be wrapped up as soon as today, but more than likely it will take the weekend to figure out at least who’s in the playoffs.
Standings:
Detroit Tigers(x) – 89-70 (leads AL Central, clinched playoff berth)
Kansas City Royals – 87-72, +1.0 (2.0 GB in AL Central)
Oakland Athletics – 86-73, – (holds second Wild Card spot)
Seattle Mariners – 84-75, 2.o GB (E# 2)
Cleveland Indians – 83-76, 3.0 GB (E# 1)
