While the Philadelphia Eagles offense prepares for the rigors of the San Francisco 49ers defense, it’s the Eagles defense that has some things to say about their own matchups on the field. Particularly, Philly defenders were keyed in on veteran speedster tight end Vernon Davis, whose Week 4 playing status is still up in the air.

“If he is back, he’s a handful,” Eagles coach Chip Kelly said Wednesday per the team’s website. “He’s probably the fastest tight end in this league. He’s got legitimate speed from the tight end spot that can stretch you.”
Linebacker Emmanuel Acho concurred with Kelly on the speed factor, but also noted that Davis isn’t unbeatable. “We just have to do a good job of knowing our assignments,” Acho said, “knowing where we have to help if we’re in man coverage, utilizing that help, and just going out there and executing. Executing our job. If we’re in man, cover him well in man. If we’re in zone, being in the right zone at the right time.”
Vernon Davis is one of the most accomplished tight ends playing today and it’s no surprise that the Eagles are keying in on him, despite the fact that he has only tallied seven catches and 83 yards in two games played this season. Despite the low yard total, Davis has still been good for two touchdown catches, which explains the Eagles’ apprehension.
