On the European side, they have four golfers in the top 10 of the World Golf Rankings. Rory McIlroy, who sits at No. 1 overall, Sergio Garcia, Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose. McIlroy will definitely give the Americans a tough time. He won the British Open, Bridgestone Invitational and the PGA Championship, all back-to-back this summer, and finished in the top 10 of the final three PGA Tour FedEx Cup playoff events earlier this month.
The Cup is taking place in Scotland at The PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles Resort, which was designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1993. Tom Watson is the captain for the U.S. squad, while Paul McGinley is the captain for Europe. Watson, 65, will be the oldest captain in Ryder Cup history. McGinley, 47, has played a part in five of the past six Ryder Cup matches, all of them European victories dating to 2002.
The United States leads the all-time series 25-12-2, but Europe has won five of the past six matches and seven of the past nine. The Americans last won in 2008 at Valhalla in Kentucky. The U.S. is winless in Europe since 1993 at The Belfry, the last time Watson was captain. Europe needs 14 points to retain the cup, and the U.S. needs 14 ½ to win.
