Jocketty’s contract was to expire at the end of this season, but now he will be under contract with the Reds until at least 2016, despite the team failing to make the playoffs in 2014. Jocketty joined the Reds in 2008, and his Cincinnati teams won NL Central titles in 2010 and 2012, and lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates in last year’s Wild Card game.
After originally joining the Reds as president of baseball operations, Jocketty took over as GM in April 2008, replacing Wayne Krivsky. He hired first-year skipper Bryan Price to replace Dusty Baker as manager after the Reds’ loss in the Wild Card game in 2013, and when Jocketty discussed his extension, he seemed to also voice support for Price’s work as well, but declined comment regarding the rest of the Cincinnati coaching staff.
“I feel bad for (Price) — the things he had to overcome this year, the injuries and bringing in a new staff and new ideas,” Jocketty said, via the team’s website. “I thought he did an excellent job. I know the players feel that way.”
Price has two years left on his contract, so it would seem his fate is tied to Jocketty’s, with both contracts expiring after 2016.
