The scoring was kicked off early thanks in part to yet another wonderful goal off the foot of Wayne Rooney.

In his tenth anniversary with the team, Rooney was the beneficiary of a great run and cross from teammate Rafael. Rooney put the cross into the back of the net, giving the Red Devils the 1-0 lead just 5 minutes into the match.

Just 15 minutes later, Robin Van Persie gave United the 2-0 lead with a sensational goal. After the ball was stolen in their defensive half, West Ham could not recover quickly enough as Falcao found a running Van Persie, who put the shot into the back of the net.

With the Hammers reeling, Diafra Sakho headed in a much needed goal in 37th minute, thanks in large part to poor goalkeeping De Gea. Regardless, Sakho’s goal heading into the half gave West Ham an opportunity they needed to come away with points.

The second half started with exciting back-and-forth action as both teams looked to score early on. Ultimately, neither side could score on their early chances, but West Ham lost a good chance when Rooney committed a poor foul against the Hammers.

After the ball was stolen from United, the Hammers were running up the middle of the pitch looking to develop an attack, and Rooney ended that quickly with a brutal foul that resulted in a red card.

Playing with only 10 men, the Red Devils were caught in a defensive shell for the remainder of the game as they desperately held on to a one goal lead.

West Ham played valiantly, putting together several chances on the offensive side, but the Man U defense continued to make the important defensive plays to thwart the attacks.

The 2-1 win for Manchester United will give them great confidence moving forward, as they take on Everton next Sunday.
