If Tennessee Titans quarterback Jake Locker can’t play on Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, veteran backup Charlie Whitehurst would get his first start since 2011, when he was with the Seattle Seahawks.

Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt, who had Whitehurst with him last season when he was the offensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers, isn’t worried about Whitehurst’s ability to get the job done.

"“I know that we talk about regular-season games being different than preseason games and they are from a standpoint of intensity,” Whisenhunt told The Tennessean. “I’ve been through eight preseason games with him, so I feel like I’ve seen him play in a game. I’ve seen him go in and perform well, so I don’t really have a question as far as what it would be like Sunday with Charlie.”"

Locker strained his wrist in last week’s loss at Cincinnati, although he played the entire game. Locker has completed 56.4 percent of his passes for 685 yards and three touchdowns, with four interceptions, for 1-2 Tennessee. He’s also run 14 times for 73 yards.

Whitehurst is known as “Clipboard Jesus”—a nickname he’s not fond of—and has been a backup most of his NFL career.

He hasn’t thrown a pass in a regular season game since Week 7 of the 2011 season, when he was with the Seattle Seahawks, and has only started four games in a five-year NFL career that includes two stints with the Chargers (2006, 2012-13) and two seasons with Seattle (2010-11).

He has completed 54.2 percent of his passes for 805 yards, with three touchdowns and four interceptions, and has 64 yards on 32 rushing attempts with two scores.

Whitehurst played in two preseason games this year, completing 10-of-15 passes for 94 yards and a touchdown.

The son of former Green Bay Packers quarterback David Whitehurst, Charlie Whitehurst was a third-round pick of the Chargers out of Clemson in 2006.
