Yoenis Cespedes not sure he wants long-term deal with Boston Red Sox
By Phil Watson
All-Star outfielder Yoenis Cespedes has been playing well since coming to the Boston Red Sox on July 31, but he’s not sure he wants to stay there for the long term.
Cespedes told the Providence Journal through an interpreter (per CBSSports.com):
"“I’m still not sure if I want to sign an extension or if I want to be a free agent. It’s still too soon.”"
Through Friday, Cespedes was hitting .269/.298/.430 in 49 games with Boston, with 10 doubles, five homers and 31 RBI.

For the year, Cespedes is at .260/.301/.453 with 88 runs, 36 doubles, six triples, 22 homers and 98 RBI in 150 games. He was traded with a competitive balance pick to the Red Sox by the Oakland Athletics at the non-waiver trade deadline for left-hander
Jon Lester, outfielder
Jonny Gomesand cash.
The A’s signed the Cuban national in February 2012 and he finished runner-up to Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels in the Rookie of the Year voting that season after hitting .292/.356/.505 with 23 homers and 82 RBI.
He fell off to .240/.294/.442 in 2013, with 26 home runs and 80 RBI, but he did win the Home Run Derby during the All-Star break.
The Red Sox owe Cespedes $10.5 million next season, after which he can become a free agent. Because of the way his contract was structured by Oakland after Cespedes’ defection from Cuba, the Red Sox cannot make him a qualifying offer and get draft pick compensation if he signs with another team.
