The MLB Draft isn’t the massive spectacle that the NBA or NFL drafts are, but it’s an important event for MLB organizations nonetheless. And with the end of baseball’s regular season, we can start to get a clearer picture of where teams will be drafting come June.

The Major League Baseball draft order (generally) goes in reverse of the standings, with ties broken by the team’s record the previous season. However, the order can’t be truly set in stone until after the free agent signing period ends, as players given the qualifying offer after the season are then tied to draft pick compensation; the team signing the free agent would surrender its top pick to the team losing the free agent, but the first 11 picks in the draft are protected from free agent compensation. The Arizona Diamondbacks will have the first pick of the 2015 MLB Draft. The Houston Astros will have the second and fifth overall picks, with the higher pick as compensation for failing to sign last year’s number one overall pick, left-hander Brady Aiken.
In addition to the Diamondbacks and one of the Astros’s picks, the 11 teams with the worst records will have their picks protected from free agent compensation: the Cincinnati Reds, the Philadephia Phillies, the Chicago Cubs, the Chiacgo White Sox, the Boston Red Sox, the Minnesota Twins, the Colorado Rockies and the Texas Rangers.
