Carolina Panthers sign running back Chris Ogbonnaya
The Carolina Panthers announced Monday that they have signed former Browns running back Chris Ogbonnaya in order to help with recent injuries to D’Angelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart.
Carolina back D’Angelo Williams suffered a high ankle sprain against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday and he is week-to-week and expected to miss next week’s game against the Chicago Bears. Carolina’s other main running back, Jonathan Stewart, has been out since the second half of their week three loss to Pittsburgh with a knee sprain. Mike Tolbert is also on the Panthers, listed as a full back but has had some carries this season.

Chris Ogbonnaya, a 6-foot, 225-pounder that the Browns listed as a fullback, rushed 49 times for 240 yards and caught 48 passes for 343 yards and two touchdowns last season. He’s a big guy, but can also have flashes of speed and gain big yards.
He was a seventh-round draft choice in 2009 by the St. Louis Rams from the University of Texas. He’s played in 46 games for the Rams, Houston Texans and Browns, rushing for 660 yards and catching 96 passes for 714 yards. He had been with the Browns since early in the 2011 season before being released in the final roster cutdown this season.
He’ll jump in and get his feet wet with the Panthers right away next week with Williams and Stewart likely out.
