New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter had his fair share of tributes throughout the season as he made his farewell tour around the nation, but perhaps one of the most impressive came on Sunday when an iconic building in his city lit up in his honor.
The Empire State Building — which often gets lit up in different colors for various reasons — was lit up in pinstripes to honor “The Captain,” who took the field for the final time in his career over the weekend.
ABC News shared a photo.
Jeter’s final at-bat of his career came at Fenway Park against the hated Boston Red Sox, but even those Boston fans were respectful to one of the game’s legends when he was making the final plays of his career.
For Jeter, that meant the world.
“I’ve been a part of some chants here at Fenway Park,” Jeter joked, via ABC, “but I don’t know if any of them were good.
“There were a lot of fans that told me that they came a long way to see these last games so I felt it was right to play. I played out of respect for this rivalry and the fans.”
