The MLB playoffs have used six umpires on the field in the playoffs since the 1947 World Series, but are reportedly adding a seventh umpire to the officiating crews of the World Series and League Championship Series for both the American and National leagues this year, with the umpire rotating between the field and handling the replay booth.

Replay review has had a rocky first season in Major League Baseball, but the report seems to indicate that MLB doesn’t want to have any mistakes in its biggest games of the year. The extra umpire will work home plate for game one, right field for game two, and then shift to the replay booth for the remainder of the series, and presumably this would apply to all three series: the World Series, American League Championship Series, and National League Championship Series.

It’s unclear if this means all postseason plays will be reviewed as the game is going on, or if it’s just another set of eyes in the replay booth to assist, but MLB hasn’t assigned umpire crews for the affected series yet. It’s also unclear if the existing managerial challenges will be modified at all for the playoffs.
