The Texas Rangers have had preliminary discussions with the agent of right-handed starting pitcher Colby Lewis regarding bringing Lewis back to the Rangers in 2015.

Lewis missed all of the 2013 season after hip surgery, and came back to the Rangers on a minor league deal for 2014. He led the Texas staff in starts with 29, innings with 170.1,  and tied with ace Yu Darvish for the team lead in wins with 10, although Lewis didn’t pitch particularly well, and probably only lasted the entire year in the rotation because of the substantial number of injuries Texas went through this year. Lewis had a 5.18 ERA with a better-but-still bad 4.46 Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP). Lewis struck out 133 batters but allowed a whopping 25 home runs this year.

Still, given Lewis’s overall performance, he probably won’t cost too much to bring back into the fold, and would likely serve the Rangers in essentially the same role in 2015 as he did this year — as starting pitching depth to use in the event of an emergency. And, despite the poor numbers, Lewis was still worth 1.6 fWAR this season, which isn’t too bad from a guy on a minor league deal.

Hopefully for Rangers fans, though, the emergency of needing starting pitchers won’t last through the entire 2015 season, like it did with the 2014 Texas Rangers’ season.
