On media day, Young told reporters that he isn’t worried about following in Love’s footsteps.
However, the new member of the Timberwolves didn’t stop there; he also took a shot at Love for his lack of postseason success (via Jon Krawczynski of The Associated Press).
It’s certainly an interesting shot for Young to take. Yes, Young is correct that Love never led the Timberwolves to the postseason and that’s an indictment on his resume. However, Love was far from Minnesota’s problem the last few years and there’s no way to spin Love’s departure as a benefit for Minnesota’s chances to win right away, which is seemingly what Young is trying to do.
Young said he’s “not trying to replace 26 and 12,” but that’s because he doesn’t have the ability to reach those heights. He averaged 17.9 points and 6.0 rebounds a season ago in a career year on a Philadelphia 76ers team that had few other options.
The Timberwolves could have done a lot worse than Young for a Love replacement. But that doesn’t mean Minnesota is going to make a postseason run this season now that Love is out of town.
