Atlas v Queretaro result
Atlas played host to Ronaldinho and Queretaro on the first night of fixtures in Apertura 2014 Jorada 11, with both sides looking to get the jornada doble off on the right foot and build momentum towards their second match in less than one week’s time.
Entering Tuesday night, Atlas sat No. 3 in the league table, while Queretaro sat three spots behind in No. 6. A win and three points would go a long way in solidifying the winning club’s chances at qualifying for Liguilla.
When the final whistle blew, Atlas showed why they are one of the top three teams in Liga MX as they defeated Los Gallos Blancos, 2-1.
It was an even match until Edy Brambila delivered a beautiful through ball in the 31st minute that found the foot of Enrique Esqueda.
Esqueda was able to put the finishing touches on the run to put Los Rojinegros ahead, 1-0.
Atlas carried the lead into the half.
Los Gallos Blancos were struggling to put together any offense in the final third of the pitch, despite some solid ball movement and build up on their attack. The Atlas defense was just holding strong.
Atlas was pushing forward more in the final 15 minutes and having success keeping the ball forward.
Queretaro did have their chances down the final stretch of the match, but it was the same old story. The final pass would always come up short or a touch would be just a hair off and Atlas would avoid danger.
After another breakdown from Queretaro, Atlas stormed down the pitch on a counter-attack. With some passing around the box, Arturo González eventually broke free and headed a blocked shot to the center of the box to a wide open Edy Brambila who was easily able to put the game away.
Ronaldinho added a golazo for Atlas in stoppage time, but it was too little, too late as Queretaro fell to Atlas.
