College football thoughts and musings from night games September 27

Well, the DVR is empty, which means another week of college football is in the books. In case you missed anything, I’ve got you covered!

More from College Football Odds

How bad is North Carolina’s defense? They have allowed 176 points in four games, and 120 over the last two. At this rate, the Tarheels may not win another game. Their easiest remaining game is their rivalry game with North Carolina State. Though after Pitt lost to Akron, I might say Pitt in Chapel Hill is their easiest. Still, that is not a “easy” game.

How does Missouri lose at home to Indiana, yet go on the road and beat South Carolina? This is a tough one to swallow for the Gamecocks. They played great defense for about 53 minutes. Then they went M.I.A. over the last seven.

Air Force already has more wins (3) in 2014 than they had in 2013 (2) after their win over Boise State. In fact, this was the first conference win for the Falcons since November of 2012.  It was an off game for Jay Ajayi, as he continues his on again, off again season. The Broncos committed a whopping seven turnovers. They are really lucky that they didn’t lose by more than 14…..

As if you need any more proof that the SEC West is the best division in football, Mississippi is 4-0 for the first time since 1970.

I was curious to see how Miami’s run defense would look against Duke and their two headed running attack of Shaun Wilson and Shaq Powell. Well, they held them to 89 yards comibined. The Miami defense was very impressive, forcing three turnovers and allowing only 264 yards of total offense to the Blue Devils. Want more good news for Miami? Brad Kaaya finally had some time, and Duke Johnson had some holes opened for him by the maligned offensive line. With the ACC Coastal wide open, don’t sleep on the Hurrcanes.

This is something that we haven’t really seen from Washington State this year. Utah jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Cougar defense clamped down and held the Utes to just two more field goals in three quarters. The Cougars got a big come from behind win over a pretty good Utah team. They may not be where Mike Leach had Texas Tech when he was forced out, but they are on their way after a shaky start to 2014.

Baylor made winning in Ames look easy. It is not. Just ask Kansas State. Baylor and Oklahoma seem on a collision course for the de-facto Big 12(10) title game to take place on November 8th.

Another game, another 200+ rushing yards for Nebraska’s Ameer Abdullah. The Huskers have turned back the clock to the 1990’s much to the delight of the fans, but at some point, they will have to throw the ball. Tommie Armstrong did throw a pretty deep ball to Kenny Bell for a touchdown. Maybe Nebraska is just keeping the playbook as vanilla as possible so Michigan State and Wisconsin don’t have much to go on…..

This about sums it up….

USC’s defense looked outstanding against Oregon State. I am going to wait to say that they have turned the corner though. They need to face a good running team with a mobile quarterback before I fully believe that they can win the Pac 12.
