The Detroit Pistons and Greg Monroe had quite the offseason. There were numerous reports he turned down an extension from the Pistons that would have made him the team’s highest-paid player. In the end, he decided to sign the Pistons’ qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent in 2015.

At Media Day, Monroe explained why he made his decision.

“My family and I made the decision,” Monroe said of signing the qualifying offer via The Detroit Free Press. “I have an agent who handles that and I don’t feel as a player it’s something I should talk about. Just because I signed a qualifying offer people assume I’m leaving. That’s not the case. … I love Detroit and the people here. I’m looking forward to playing for this coaching staff. There’s no problem with any of my teammates.”

“I love Detroit and the people here. I’m looking forward to playing for this coaching staff. There’s no problem with any of my teammates. I went to Josh and we talked. He knows what I said and didn’t say.”

No one should be counting the Pistons keeping Monroe beyond the season but no one should put any money on it either.

Last season, Monroe averaged 15.2 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 49.7% from the field and 65.7% from the free throw line last season. Monroe has put up 14.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 50.8% from the floor and 67.8% from the foul line in his career. The Pistons selected Monroe with seventh-overall pick in the first round of the 2010 draft.
