NFL Fantastic 5: Green Bay Packers, others head offense-heavy Week 4
By Shaun Church
The DeMarco Murray & Terrance Williams show
Stat: Murray, Williams score two touchdowns each
This is significant because of how long it has been since a Dallas Cowboys wide receiver has caught two or more touchdowns in the same game his teammate at running back rushed for at least two of his own.
The last time? Dec. 16, 2006, when against the Atlanta Falcons, wideout Terrell Owens had five receptions for 96 yards and two scores and running back Marion Barber rushed 11 times for 69 yards and two scores.
Can you guess which Cowboys receiver/running back duo never did that? Yes, Hall of Famers Michael Irvin and Emmitt Smith never accomplished what Williams and Murray did. That is surprising, to say the least.
The New Orleans Saints defense stood no chance against Murray and Co. Sunday night, as Williams benefited from the star running back’s success, and vice versa.
Dallas’ offense is gaining a lot of steam with how Murray is playing early this season. Murray leads the NFL in rushing yards (534) and touchdowns (5), and quarterback Tony Romo has been nothing short of fantastic since a Week 1 stinker against the San Francisco 49ers. Since that game, Romo is 59-of-81 passing (72.84 percent) for 655 yards, 8.09 yards per attempt, with six touchdowns and one interception for a 116.0 rating.
Romo is the fourth-rated passer in the NFL over that span, behind only Philip Rivers (128.2 rating), Andrew Luck (119.6) and Aaron Rodgers (118.5), and the Cowboys have not lost in that time.
