According to Mike Vorkunov of NJ.com:

"Jenrry Mejia, the Mets closer, underwent surgery for a sports hernia today in Philadelphia. It went successfully, according to the Mets.Rehab from the surgery will take three weeks."

Mejia is just one of a number of young, talented pitchers in the Mets’ system. After a couple stints in the team’s starting rotation, Mejia shifted to the bullpen and the Mets took a long look at him in the closer’s role this season. The results were mixed, though Mejia certainly showed flashes of a guy who can pitch well in big spots.

In total, Mejia worked 93.2 innings in 63 appearances this season. He converted 28 saves and posted a 3.65 ERA. This might not be the last time that Mejia kicks back and forth between the rotation and the bullpen, but he undoubtedly has a future as a useful pitcher for the Mets moving foward.

The 24-year-old Mejia signed with Mets as an amateur free agent all the way back in 2007. He made his big league debut at age 20 in 2010. He made brief appearances in the big leagues again in 2012 and 2013 before settling in for a season in the bullpen in 2014. Mejia is arbitration eligible this off-season and under team control through the 2019 season.
