AFC Defensive Player of the Month goes to J.J. Watt
It was a September to remember for J.J. Watt, the star defensive end for the Houston Texans. As a reward for the first four games of the season, he was named the AFC’s Defensive Player of the Month for September.

Watt helped the lead the Texans to a 3-1 September. He even caught a touchdown pass on offense!
His September consisted of 16 quarterback hits, five quarterback hurries, 15 tackles, four tackles for loss, three passes defensed, two sacks, a blocked extra point, a fumble recovery, and an interception return for a touchdown last Sunday that you had to see to believe.
Not bad for the first month of the season, huh?
In fact, his 16 quarterback hits are more than 13 entire teams have so far, and are double the second player on the list.
Watt is not someone you want to see anywhere near you if you are a quarterback.
The play of J.J. Watt over the last two-plus seasons only raises the question of whether a defensive player can win the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award. Defensive statistics, especially those for defensive lineman, are hard to compare against players from other areas of the field. The quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers all put up the gaudy numbers that everyone knows. Watt toils away in statistical obscurity.
But every Sunday for three hours, he gets revenge in the only way he can: by punishing quarterbacks.
