Ben Affleck drew a hard line during the filming of ‘Gone Girl’, refusing to wear a New York Yankees cap in a scene.
The rivalry between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox is common knowledge to most people, even those who are not baseball fans. Often that extends into the pop culture and entertainment world, with famous figures making their allegiance clear.

Perhaps no actor has more famously professed his love for a team than Ben Affleck, who consistently reminds the world that he loves the Boston Red Sox. That has come in the form of plots built around his beloved team, scenes filmed at Fenway Park, and many moments where Affleck’s character dons a Red Sox cap on screen.
Affleck had his commitment tested during the filming of the critically acclaimed ‘Gone Girl.’ Director David Fincher wanted Affleck to wear a Yankees cap in a scene in an airport. Affleck flatly refused, leading to a legitimate argument between the two. As passed along by Cara Buckley of the New York Times:
"“That was the only fight David and I had,” Mr. Affleck said, “and it was a legitimate fight.”During a scene set at a New York airport, Mr. Affleck’s character, Nick Dunne, tries to evade recognition by donning a baseball hat. Mr. Fincher, Mr. Affleck said, wanted the character to wear a Yankees cap, because he believed that worked best for the movie……“I said, ‘David, I love you, I would do anything for you,’” Mr. Affleck recalled. “‘But I will not wear a Yankees hat. I just can’t. I can’t wear it because it’s going to become a thing, David. I will never hear the end of it. I can’t do it.’ And I couldn’t put it on my head.”"
As a reminder, Affleck has a scene where he appears nude in this movie. Full frontal nudity? Sure. Yankees cap? Absolutely not.
We are a long way removed from the days that Ben Affleck was a punchline. In this case, his growing credibility as a serious actor is only outdone by his loyalty to the team he loves.
