The Dallas Mavericks brought in big man Tyson Chandler for a season and he helped lead them to a 2011 NBA Championship. Chandler walked away after the season to accept a longer deal with the New York Knicks, and the Mavericks made the move to bring him back and help bolster their defense.

Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle says he needs to resume his role and be the leader of the defense again. As a big man, Chandler can have a different vantage point of the floor and it is his duty to communicate what he sees.

“Big guys are the ones that see the whole floor,” Carlisle said, via the Dallas Morning News. “They’ve got to communicate with the guards because of blind screens and a lot of things that happen behind them. And so, big guys who talk and are vocal and loud are really critical. When I played at Boston, Robert Parish was one of the best guys in the league at that time. Tyson is just like that. He’s always letting you know what’s going on. And he takes it beyond that. He’s always trying to keep guys into it. It just really helps our whole situation.”

And there is no need to be concerned with Chandler’s health, Carlisle says he is in good shape.

“He’s taken great care of himself,” Carlisle said. “He’s in good shape and he’s going to be in great shape shortly. I don’t see any decline in energy or enthusiasm. We’re going to be careful with his minutes, play him the right number of minutes and make sure we don’t play him too long. He’ll be ready.”
