Trailing 17-10 in the fourth quarter, Ole Miss quarterback Bo Wallace threw a 34-yard touchdown strike to Vince Sanders with 5:29 to go. Alabama returner Christion Jones coughed the ball on the ensuing kickoff, giving the Rebels the ball at the 31-yard line with 5:21 remaining, sending the crowd at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium into a frenzy.
The Rebels would eventually add the go-ahead score via a Wallace 10-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Walton with 2:54 remaining.
Alabama blocked the ensuing extra point, but it wouldn’t matter, as the Rebels held on. With Alabama driving in Ole Miss territory, the Rebels picked off Alabama quarterback Blake Sims with less than a minute remaining to effectively end the game.
Wallace finished the game 18-31 for 251 yards and three touchdowns. Jaylen Walton was the the team’s top rusher on the day, adding 39 yards on the ground. Evan Engram (71 receiving yards) and Laquon Treadwell (55 receiving yards with a touchdown) were Ole Miss’ best receivers.
On the other side, Alabama quarterback Sims was 19-31 for 288 yards and the interception. T.J. Yeldon posted 123 rushing yards and Amari Cooper added 91 receiving yards.
Undoubtedly, this is a season-defining win for Ole Miss, putting them in good position to make a run at the College Football Playoff. As for Nick Saban’s crew, getting back to the mountaintop won’t be an easy after this one.
Ole Miss will hope to keep the good vibes going next Saturday against Texas A&M on the road. Alabama will take on Arkansas next Saturday at home.
