The Kansas City Royals played their third straight extra-innings game on Saturday night, defeating the Los Angeles Angels by a final score of 4-1 and taking a 2-0 series lead.
Another night, another home run by a former top prospect for the Kansas City Royals. This time it was first baseman Eric Hosmer who blasted the deciding home run, an absolute shot in the top of the 11th inning to propel the Royals to a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Teams play a tight, low-scoring game against the Royals at their own risk. Kansas City showed why once again in this game. The score was tied 1-1 for the majority of this game, with both starters turning in outstanding outings. Yordano Ventura went 7.0 innings, struck out 5 hitters and allowed just 1 run. Rookie Matt Shoemaker went 6.0 innings for the Angels, allowing just 1 run himself and striking out 6 hitters.
With both bullpens putting the clamps on things late, this game went into extra innings once again. It was the third straight playoff game for the Royals that went into extras, and it was their third straight extra-inning victory.
As far as key plays are concerned, the Royals came up with another huge defensive play in the bottom of the 8th inning. C.J. Cron doubled to lead off the inning and Collin Cowgill came in as a pinch runner. Cowgill tried to tag up and run from second to third on a fly ball to center field, only to be cut down by Jarrod Dyson.
The Angels’ lineup continues to fall short. At the top of that list of disappointments is “best player on the planet” Mike Trout, who is still hitless in the playoffs and struck out to end the game.
It is feeling more and more like a magical run for the Royals.
The Royals were down four runs with six outs to go in their season. Now they won two on road vs. best team in baseball. Playoffs are funny.

Maybe the Angels have just run into a buzz saw. Maybe their offense just went cold at the wrong time. Whatever the case may be, the Angels will travel to Kansas City on Sunday to try and fend off elimination against “Big Game” James Shields and the Royals.
